Manny glanced from his daughter to the sabre, his face a study in contemplative anxiety.
“Well…”
“C’mon, Manny,”...

(I’m running errands for my pregnant wife. While walking to a nearby store, I see two teenagers harassing a child that is only four or five years old. I shoo them away from the boy, and he introduces himself.)
Me: “So, where’s your mom at?”
Boy: “She’s in the store. Do you have kids?”
Me: “Not yet. We’re expecting a baby girl soon, though.”
Boy: “Well, she’s going to turn out nice, like you! So, I’m going to marry her someday!”
(I laugh, and play along while I bring him to the service desk, and wait until his mom picks him up. Six years later, my daughter comes home from school and introduces us to a friend that defended her against a bully on the playground. I didn’t recognize him, but he certainly knew who I was!)

some academic papers about the asoiaf series
stannisbaratheon:
we’ve got our meta on tumblr so i wondered about actual academic papers published online. i always thought that our own meta posts are basically raw versions of literary analyses done by scholars. so it’s interesting to see that what we write about here on a daily basis is actually an academic pursuit. (these were all collated from the internet, i’m sure other papers exist that...

Word of the Day: Theurgy
writeworld:
theurgy \THEE-ur-jee, noun:
1. the working of a divine or supernatural agency in human affairs. 2. a system of beneficent magic practiced by the Egyptian Platonists and others.
But it is with the later evolution of theurgy in the Platonist milieu that we are mainly concerned, and here we find some compensation for the lacunosity of the Oracula. — Garth Fowden, The Egyptian Hemes,...

Charming: Why not?

Some everyday things you can include in your writing to make your character more beliveable: • Most knives and scissors have the edge on the opposite side. We use ‘blunt’ or customized blades most of the time. May sound as a little thing, but really annoying. This also goes for swords, bows and some other weapons. • Left handed people need...

Writing Tips #69: How to Style Profanity
bookgeekconfessions:
Some time ago, I wrote about the suitability of profanity in prose. My conclusion was that, depending on the context, it’s up to the producer to decide whether to publish profanity and the reader whether to accept or reject it. But if you, the producer, decide to allow profanity, know that there are degrees of deployment.
The simplest approach, of course, is to treat...
